Kickin’ it with Thomas Codd London
We were lucky enough to have a chat with Tom, the inspiring creator behind the exciting label, Thomas Codd London now available at The Little Gem, Australia. We wanted to know how Tom goes about kickin’ it in ol’ London town……
Who/What is Thomas Codd London?
Thomas Codd London is a menswear brand run and led by myself, Thomas Codd. The company is a year old currently selling its 2nd Autumn/Winter Collection. I studied at UCA Rochester in fashion design and very early on into the course new I wanted to start up my own label, hence a year from graduating launched the label.
How do you go about designing a range?
The design process is a selfish one when I come to think of it, as I design solely for myself. I’m a realist, I know my strengths, I’m a young londoner who has a great sense of style and great knowledge of history, film, music and subculture so I have my own way about me that I like things done and from an early age what I would wear would have an influence on others or even cause some debate. This I really liked! So my design ethos is all pendent on my desire to wear something that looks a certain way as I know it will look good and people will follow in wearing it causing the product to sell!
What are your visions for this label?
My visions for the label are very plain, I want it to explode! I want it to grow so big! To trend, to be a subculture but gets eaten up by the masses. There is no bigger thrill than seeing your creation sell or be worn by someone. Love being out and seeing someone randomly in my gear! Cover the world in Thomas Codd London and my vision will be realised.
What do you think of current trends in the market for both men and women?
I have to be totally honest, I do not follow trends. I dont buy fashion magazines or read many blogs so not aware of the market trends. Could only base it on what maybe the artist whose at no1 is singing as he must be todays trend setter, so tinie tempah??? Skinny jeans, v-neck and leather?? Really cool, I like it! But its none of my pieces so can not completely agree with it.
The brand is not trend led and I am not, so I’m not aware of colours or cuts. I have dressed this way for over 4 years and my wardrobes only new additions are that of my new collections. I’m ignorant to competitors, the trend is me, my desire to wear something as said in question 2. The label has a distinct look from skinhead and mod and them key fabrics and sillohette will stick!
What advice would you give to people who want to start up a label as you have?
Be brave, be patient, listen to advice – don’t be led by it and don’t give up! My living is based on determination and passion. It can not be a job or 9-5, it has to be your life and love!
